We are frequently asked how it works,
below are the typical stages we go through to ensure a perfect,
invisible repair every time:
Stage 1 – Mixing the
Paint
The first thing we do is to make sure we can mix the paint
for the car we are about to repair. We use the paint code,
which is located on every car, to look up the correct paint
formula and then cross check against printed colour swatches
before mixing. The tints are then mixed with the specially
formulated ChipsAway additives to create our unique paint
system.
Stage 2 – Preparation
of the Damaged Area
Following cleaning and masking out of the local area, the
damage is either feathered out or repaired using an appropriate
stopper to restore the profile.
Stage 3 – Primer Coat
Once the profile has been restored, the next stage is to
apply two coats of sealing primer to the repair area and
dry under infra red lamps.
Stage 4 – Base (Colour) Coat
Having sanded the Primer Coat to remove any texture, the
next stage is to spray on the colour coat, blending out
the repair into the surrounding original finish.
Stage 5 – Clear Coat Lacquer
The Base (Colour) Coat is sealed by applying two/three coats
of two-pack (activated) clear coat lacquer, and again drying
under infra red lamps.
Stage 6 - Polishing
Once the Clear Coat Lacquer has cooled the final stage is
to lightly flat the repair area and polish up using liquid
polishing compounds.
Stone
Chip Repairs
We can touch-in stone chip damage to
any part of the car to provide a barrier to water and salt
ingress. Touch-in repairs are typically applied with a small
artist brush. Despite our name however, stone chip repairs
are not a significant part of our business and are not invisible.
In the vast majority of cases a chip repair will serve to
take your eye off the area and provide protection (not guaranteed).
